What is it like to live in Clayton, NC?

Clayton feels like a small town that is getting bigger fast. Downtown is a few blocks of Main Street with local restaurants, a brewery and a Saturday farmers market at Horne Square, and it hosts the town's biggest festivals. Outside downtown, newer neighborhoods spread out in every direction, with shopping along Clayton Blvd and NC-42 (now signed Veterans Parkway).

Daily life is suburban. Most people drive, the Raleigh commute is part of the routine for many households, and weekends tend to center on the parks, the Neuse River trails and downtown events. The town runs its own electric utility, its own parks department and a public library on Church Street.

Clayton suits buyers who want a town with its own center and calendar, quick access to I-40, and more room than closer-in Wake County towns, and who are fine with a 25 to 45 minute drive to Raleigh or RTP.

Clayton, NC history

According to Johnston County's town profile, the community grew up along a road cut by Governor Tryon's troops around 1770 as they marched from New Bern toward Hillsborough. When the North Carolina Railroad came through, the depot was in the home of Mrs. Sarah Stallings, and the stop was called Stallings' Station. That name lasted about three years before it became Clayton. The town incorporated in 1869.

After the Civil War, merchant Ashley Horne built a large farming and merchandising business, and by the early 1900s Clayton was a market for cotton, watermelons and tobacco. The town lost much of its financial standing in the Depression of the 1930s, and the population grew slowly for decades after.

You can still see that history downtown. Several Clayton sites are on the National Register of Historic Places:

Things to do in Clayton, NC

Downtown. Main Street is the center of town life. The Clayton Farm and Community Market sets up at 348 E. Main St. on Saturdays from April through October (9 a.m. to 1 p.m.) and every other Saturday in winter. The Clayton Center at 111 E. Second St. has a 600-seat auditorium for concerts and shows, and the Hocutt-Ellington Memorial Library is at 100 S. Church St.

Greenways and parks. Clayton's trail system is one of the main reasons people move here. From the town's greenway page and parks news:

• Clayton River Walk on the Neuse: a 4-mile, 10-foot-wide paved trail from the Covered Bridge Road trailhead (2686 Covered Bridge Rd.). It is part of the Mountains-to-Sea Trail and the East Coast Greenway, and you can ride or walk about 30 miles to Falls Lake Dam in Raleigh.
• Sam's Branch Greenway: 1.25 paved miles from N. O'Neil St. to the Neuse River, where it links to the River Walk.
• Municipal Park (325 McCullers St.): the town's oldest park, rebuilt in 2022 with a splash pad, playground, basketball courts and a community stage.
• East Clayton Community Park (1774 Glen Laurel Rd.): turf fields, an 18-hole disc golf course, the all-abilities Harmony Playground, a dog park nearby, and summer games by the Clayton Clovers, a wood-bat collegiate baseball team.

The Clayton Harvest Festival, put on by the Clayton Chamber of Commerce each October, fills Main Street with a midway, a classic car show, the Squealin' on the Square BBQ competition, a Latin American Festival, vendors and live music. The town's event calendar also includes Main Street Trick-or-Treat in late October, a Veterans Recognition Ceremony in November, the Christmas Village and Tree Lighting in early December, and the Clayton Christmas Parade in mid-December.

Local food and drink. Jones Café at 415 E. Main St. has served breakfast, burgers and its well-known hot dogs since 1958. Deep River Brewing at 700 W. Main St. pours its own beer, from IPAs to lagers and stouts, and offers tours on request.

Day trips. Downtown Raleigh is about half an hour away, and the Neuse River trail itself is a day trip by bike, running north to Falls Lake Dam.

How far is Clayton, NC from Raleigh?

Downtown Clayton is about 16 miles from downtown Raleigh, roughly 26 minutes with no traffic, by Clayton Blvd or I-42 to I-40. In 2025 NCDOT renamed the old US-70 Clayton Bypass I-42, US-70 Business through town became Clayton Blvd, and NC-42 toward Wake County became Veterans Parkway.

Clayton is served by Johnston County Public Schools (JCPS). Schools are assigned by home address, not by town name, and attendance zones can change as the district grows. Some homes with Clayton mailing addresses are zoned to schools outside Clayton, including Smithfield-area schools, so check every address in the JCPS School Finder before you buy.

For college and job training, Johnston Community College has its main campus in Smithfield and uses the Johnston County Workforce Development Center in Clayton.

Cost of living and property taxes in Clayton

• Grifols, whose Clayton plasma campus has more than 1,600 employees and is Johnston County's largest employer, announced a $351.6 million expansion in 2020 with about 300 jobs to be filled from 2024 to 2028 (Research Triangle Regional Partnership).
• The town's economic development office counts about 28,500 jobs in the 27520 and 27527 ZIP codes, with pharmaceutical manufacturing far more concentrated here than the national average (Think Clayton).

It has a Clayton mailing address (ZIP 27520) but sits in unincorporated Johnston County, between Clayton and Smithfield near Wilson's Mills. That means the county rate of $0.625 per $100 instead of the in-town $1.00, and it is about 26 miles from downtown Raleigh.

For 2026-27, the JCPS School Finder lists Wilsons Mills Elementary and Smithfield Middle for the community's address. Assignments can change, so confirm those and the high school in the School Finder.
