Clayton sits in Johnston County about 16 to 20 miles southeast of downtown Raleigh, a 25- to 30-minute drive along US-70 and I-40. The town has grown from roughly 26,000 residents in 2020 to an estimated 32,600 in 2025, and much of that growth is new construction in planned neighborhoods on the east and south sides of town.

Two of Johnston County's largest employers, Novo Nordisk's biomanufacturing campus and Grifols' plasma-medicine campus, are in Clayton, and both have announced major expansions that will add jobs through the decade. Homes here are zoned to Johnston County Public Schools, and downtown Clayton's Main Street, the Clayton Center and the Sam's Branch and Neuse River greenways are minutes from most new-home neighborhoods.
